Norman Daniel, in his book Islam and the West, observed that societies often perceive foreign cultures as threats, fueling intermittent conflicts between Islam and Christendom throughout history. This sense of danger, whether real or imagined, shapes people’s beliefs, leading to distorted and prejudiced interpretations of others’ ideas. Over time, misunderstandings evolved into myths that barely resembled original truths. For instance, early Byzantine critics dismissed the Qur’an without sincere understanding, branding the God of Muhammad as a false figure. Such misrepresentations have persisted, as seen in controversies like Salman Rushdie’s Satanic Verses, perpetuating hostility and hindering empathy. Even notable scholars like Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziah responded with equally harsh critiques, reflecting the deep-rooted tensions that have shaped interfaith dialogues.
